Smithfield Foods, Paula Deen Join Forces To Encourage Families to Eat Meals Together

September 19, 2006 (New York) – Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced today that celebrity cook, restaurateur, author and TV personality Paula Deen has selected the company in an exclusive partnership aimed at promoting meals that encourage families to spend more time eating together.

The partnership between Deen and Smithfield Foods is part of a growing national effort to promote the many benefits of having families share meals together several times a week.

To achieve the partnership’s goal, Deen will be involved in a number of activities including community outreach efforts, personal appearances, Web-based recipe and meal preparation tips and print and broadcast communications including Webcasts and new product development.

Deen’s efforts will help meal preparers feel more confident in selecting cuts of meat for meals that take less time to prepare, are easy to make and are well-balanced for family members.

Deen said she chose Smithfield as her partner in this joint effort, “…because I’ve been using Smithfield products for years. This is a company I can trust.”

In announcing the partnership, James D. Schloss, Smithfield’s corporate vice president, sales and marketing, said, “Finding time to get families together for a meal can be difficult, but it’s worth the effort because research studies have clearly demonstrated that children who eat regular meals with their families are more likely to do better in school and eat more nutritiously. Nourishing children’s minds and bodies has long been a passion for Smithfield Foods, which makes this partnership’s goal a natural fit,” he added.

Schloss cited national research that showed teenagers who frequently eat meals with their families each week perform better academically and are much more likely to consume more key nutrients and fewer snack foods than their counterparts.

“A key part of rounding up family members for a meal is preparing wholesome and nutritious food that children and their parents want to eat,” Deen said. “When you combine my years of experience in the kitchen with Smithfield’s top-quality products, together we can whip up some meals that families can’t wait to share.”

Deen also pointed out, “In addition to strengthening family ties, cooking meals at home gives parents more control over quality and quantity of foods. You can better control portions and your kids are more likely to try new foods. Kids also can learn important life lessons and social skills through the quality one-on-one time presented by cooking and enjoying meals together. It certainly paid off for my boys!”

Deen and her sons Jamie and Bobby own and operate the highly popular The Lady & Sons restaurant in Savannah, Ga., and she and her brother run the equally successful Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House nearby. Known for her “down-home” personality and traditional Southern cooking, Deen has authored four cookbooks, publishes a lifestyle magazine called Cooking with Paula Deen and has her own TV show, Paula’s Home Cooking, on the Food Network.

“Families are so busy today, and time to prepare meals is limited, so the trick is to keep it simple, but at the same time make meals interesting and nutritious,” Deen said. “I’ll be cooking meals that include wholesome and great tasting ingredients, but won’t take a lot of time to prepare.”

C. Larry Pope, Smithfield’s chief executive officer, said, “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with Paula because she is the epitome of great food, family and fun. What’s more, she is a true American success story, starting out with just $200 and two teenage sons when she launched a catering service out of her home, eventually becoming a highly successful businesswoman with a huge and loyal audience.”

Under the partnership agreement, Deen will initially promote various Smithfield-branded products. Smithfield will use its Web site and other promotional venues to market Deen’s signature products, including her cookbooks, seasonings, BBQ sauces, aprons, T-shirts, gift certificates and cooking school.

Smithfield Foods is an international food company with operations throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, Europe and Asia. In addition to Smithfield’s more than 50 brands of high-quality pork, beef and turkey products, the company also offers more than 200 gourmet food products.

Smithfield Foods has delivered a 24 percent average annual compounded rate of return to investors since 1975. Patrick Cudahy Inc. Taps Ramon Aldape to Lead Rapidly Growing Hispanic Marketing Efforts

June 7, 2005 (Cudahy, WI) – Patrick Cudahy, Inc. announces Ramon Aldape to lead the Sales and Marketing efforts of the company's ethnic brands.

In this position Mr. Aldape will be responsible for the planning and
direction of sales and marketing efforts by this Smithfield Foods unit
toward the fastest growing segment of the US population. At the same time
he will also work on bringing current products from the company's popular La Abuelita line to mainstream America and play a key role in the company's new acquisition of 814 Americas, which manages and markets popular Hispanic Brands, such as El Mino, Higueral, and Riojano. This move marks the next major step for Patrick Cudahy in tapping into the fast growing U.S. Hispanic ethnic market segment, currently estimated to be in excess of $686 billion annually. By 2009 Hispanics will account for a projected 9% of total US purchasing power.

Ramon started at Patrick Cudahy 13 years ago, working on the processing
plant floor as an hourly employee. He earned his degree in marketing and
business administration and has been working in the marketing and sales
department for several years.

Mr. Aldape said; "Patrick Cudahy has two immediate major objectives for
the Hispanic market. The first is to identify the key opportunity segments
of the diverse Hispanic audience and develop an appropriate market basket of products. Many Americans don't realize how diverse the Hispanic market
truly is. In fact, there is no single Hispanic market. Instead we have
Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Honduran, Dominican and many other specific
market sub-segments. While they share many common culinary traditions, each has it's own rich cooking tradition and unique approach to meal preparation as well."

Ramon continued; "Our second major challenge is to identify current
mainstream market opportunities for Hispanic specialties, like our current
La Abuelita line of specialty meats. A few years ago foods like pizza,
calzones and tacos were considered ethnic specialties. Today they are
everyday meal choices in the freezer case at your local supermarket".

Patrick Cudahy bacon, ham, salamis and other meats have been a staple for
Midwestern homes and restaurants and have been a symbol of absolute quality and great taste for over 115 years. With headquarters in Wisconsin, Patrick Cudahy has been a part of Smithfield Foods family since 1984.

Patrick Cudahy Inc. Adds Fast Growing Market Segment and Latin Flavor, with Acquisition of 814 Americas Inc.

March 21, 2005 (Cudahy, WI) – Patrick Cudahy, Inc. announced that the company had acquired all assets of 814 Americas Inc, Elizabeth, New Jersey, from Campofrio Alimentacion, S.A., a leading food enterprise headquartered in Madrid, Spain. With this move Patrick Cudahy is tapping into the fast growing U.S. Hispanic ethnic market segment, currently estimated to be in excess of $686 billion annually.

With over 30 successful years serving the Hispanic audiences with chorizo, traditional Dominican and other Caribbean salamis, sausage and other prepared meat specialties, 814 Americas, Inc. has been ranked as the "Most Recognized Line" by the US Association of Latin American Consumers (USALC). Now, with Hispanic and Caribbean menu items becoming increasingly mainstream, the demand for these specialty sausage products is growing even more aggressively in both retail and foodservice venues.

"By 2009, Hispanics will make up 9% of US purchasing power. This is a market we want to continue to build on with a diverse line of quality products that meet the needs of today's Hispanic consumer. The brand recognition and reputation 814 Americas has for quality makes them an ideal component for Patrick Cudahy's growing Hispanic product portfolio," said Bill Otis, President and Chief Operating Officer of Patrick Cudahy.

Mr. Otis continued, "814 Americas will continue to operate as an independent company backed by the full resources of Patrick Cudahy. They will be focusing on developing and marketing their current major brands; including El Mino Chorizos, Salami Higueral, Salchichon Cervecero and their other high-profile Hispanic market favorites. They will also be working closely, in the future, with Patrick Cudahy to help extend these popular brands into new markets."

Million Dollar Gift Pushes Campaign Near Top

April 19, 2002 (Cudahy, WI) – The Cudahy Public Library announced today that it has received a $1 million dollar gift from the Patrick and Anna M. Cudahy Fund, payable over five years, for Cudahy's new library. The Fund was founded by the late Michael F. Cudahy, who headed the Patrick Cudahy company for more than forty years. The Fund is presently headed by his son, Richard D. Cudahy, who was CEO of the Patrick Cudahy company for ten years and is now a Federal Judge.

In confirming the $1 million dollar gift, Judge Cudahy said, "We are pleased to put the library fund drive over the top. The Cudahy Library is a model of progressive library management and deserves to be the centerpiece of Cudahy's important redevelopment project."

"Fifty-three years ago, a leading industrialist, Michael F. Cudahy, donated money to build Cudahy's War Memorial Library, the library that is still used today. Now his son, the Honorable Richard D. Cudahy is following in his father's footsteps with a leadership gift that will make a new library a reality. This generous gift is a historic and fitting tribute to a family that for decades has shaped, and continues to shape, a community through leadership and service," said Roger Kapella, Capital Campaign Chair and President and Chief Operating Officer of Patrick Cudahy.

Construction of the new library building, to be named the Cudahy Family Library, is already underway in the 3500 block of East Barnard Avenue in downtown Cudahy and is scheduled for completion by January, 2003. The new library is the first phase of a neighborhood improvement and downtown redevelopment project.

"The new library will serve as a centerpiece for downtown revitalization, not only strengthening the neighborhood but the entire community. Benefits such as increased access to technology, room for adequate shelving and expanding collections, quiet reading rooms, meeting facilities, a children's room, young adult area, and a local history room will make the new library a showpiece for southeastern Wisconsin," said James Williamson, Library Board President.

Last year, the city of Cudahy committed $3.2 million for a new building after a referendum was held and 75% of the voters voiced support for a new facility. The cost for all infrastructure needs had to be covered by private funds. While the original capital campaign goal was $750,000, final bids for technology, telecommunications, furniture, signage, artwork, security and overages in construction required the campaign goal be raised to $1.5 million. With this gift, and other fund raising from area businesses, civic and community groups, foundations and individuals, campaign total to date is $1.45 million. Contributions are still being submitted.

"This is a proud time in Cudahy's history. Despite the economic downturn, residents rallied behind the need for a first-rate library that would serve as a center for information and education for themselves and future generations of Cudahy residents." said Kapella.

Patrick Cudahy Opens New Distribution Center and Cold Storage Facility

65 guests including city officials, foodservice and retail trade customers, contractors and agency representatives joined Patrick Cudahy employees in celebrating the opening of the new Distribution Center and Cold Storage Facility.

There are approximately 4000 pallet positions in the combined freezers and coolers in this 56,900 square foot facility. Ten loading dock doors are operational and door capacity can be increased by 30%. Product from the Distribution Center is shipped via truck from New York to Los Angeles.

Storage consolidation in the new Distribution Center and Cold Storage facility enables Patrick Cudahy to improve their customer service and product management control. It provides significant opportunities to grow the business and implements a more cost efficient process for storage and order fill.
